Buying and selling on campus should be convenient — and safe. Follow these guidelines to protect yourself and others.
For buyers
- Inspect before you pay. Check the item in person. Test phones, laptops, and electronics before handing over money.
- Meet in public places. Use busy campus spots, hall porters’ areas, or daylight meeting points — not isolated locations.
- Never pay in full upfront. Avoid mobile money or transfers to strangers before you receive the item. Be wary of “too good to be true” prices.
- Bring a friend. For high-value items, meet with someone you trust.
- Keep proof. Save chats, listing links, and receipts where possible.
For sellers
- Be honest in your listing. Describe condition, defects, and whether the item is used or new.
- Prefer cash or verified in-person payment. Wait until payment clears before releasing the item.
- Meet safely. Same rules as buyers — public, visible locations on or near campus.
- Protect your contact details. Use the platform’s contact options; avoid sharing unnecessary personal information.
Red flags — walk away if you see
- Pressure to pay immediately via mobile money without seeing the item
- Seller or buyer refusing to meet in person for local items
- Prices far below market value with urgent excuses
- Requests to move conversation off-platform before any trust is built
- Fake payment screenshots or “I have sent it” claims without confirmation
Hostels & services
- Visit hostels or service locations before paying deposits.
- Confirm ownership or authority to rent/sublet where relevant.
- Get agreements in writing for rent, duration, and refunds.
